According to a report from Information Age’s Cloud Security 2011 conference, businesses will soon be using a Software-as-a Service application from one provider, built on a Platform-as-a-Service offering from another, which in turn is based on Infrastructure-as-a-Service delivered by a third.

In June, my colleague Ian Rhodes warned that “The Olympics will be a significant challenge for the UK infrastructure”. But it’s not just bandwidth that’s the problem. Concerns over power shortages during next year’s Olympic Games in London have caused Verizon Business to dismiss the capital as the site for its flagship data centre.

A recent article in The Telegraph about London’s Olympic Stadium revealed that “the grass came from Scunthorpe, the seats from Luton and the roof from Bolton”. The fact that it was all built in Britain is truly a remarkable achievement. However, I’m reminded that I was recently asked why it was that SMEs had failed to win contracts for the 2012 Olympics.
