Did you know? Interesting data and storage facts

As an IT professional with a particular interest in data and Cloud services, I often stumble across nuggets of information that grab my attention. I’m sure I’m not alone in my fondness for facts quantified in numerical terms, and I’d like to share with you my favourite data and storage statistics:

Did you know…?

  1. 5.75 million new servers are installed every year 1
  2. The average lifespan of a server is three years 1
  3. Replacing an ageing server with a new one could save up to one tonne of carbon emissions across its lifespan 2
  4. A mere 4% of companies are currently choosing to back up their data using Cloud services. 43% of non-adopters cite the reason as lack of Cloud training 1
  5. Email users send 204,166,667 messages every minute. Where is this data being stored? A common theme running throughout these stats is the danger of hosting and maintaining your own infrastructure onsite: can you afford to replace servers every three years, and can they handle 44 times more data? 3
