Make yourself at home…in the Cloud

Posted by |

A recent BBC article highlighted the changing face of working practices in the UK. Citing ‘teleworking’ as the catalyst for fast-paced evolution, the report tells us how the number of people working from home or remotely rose from 14% in 2006 to 46% in 2008…with the trend set to continue.

It doesn’t take a genius to understand that smartphones, tablets, laptops and increased broadband coverage naturally enable a more flexible way of working. But I often wonder why even more businesses aren’t taking full advantage of tools such as PC-based video conferencing, remote desktop sharing, online conference tools like Microsoft Live Meeting, and more. Of course, there’s the argument that productivity suffers when workers are faced with the temptation of Jeremy Kyle, Skysports News or ‘just one more’ jammie dodger from the biscuit tin. But when the likes of BT claim that ‘homeworkers save it an average of £6,000 a year each, are 20% more productive and take fewer sick days’, it may be easier to forgive a few extra breaks here and there!
