How Law Firms Can Gain Competitive Edge through a Managed Service Approach to IT

Law firms and legal professionals have been slow to introduce outsourced IT solutions - either through hosted services or managed by third parties. The main priorities so far have been on lessening the administrative and housekeeping burden, minimising the need for expensive hardware implementations and maximising valuable time. Cloud-based services offer a new outsourcing option but is this the answer for today's firms?

According to the Legal Support Network's (LSN) Legal IT Landscapes 2015 Top 100 firms report, it could take two years for migration rates of key legal applications to the Cloud (think PMS, CMS, DMS, CRM etc.) to hit the 60% mark. However, hesitancy towards moving into the Cloud is still strong with over half of the survey's respondents answering 'undecided' or 'not very likely' to 'how likely is your firm to adopt Cloud-based solutions for its significant systems?'

But is this hesitancy misguided? Today, the off-premise offering has developed so much it has created a greater motivation for legal practices to start the move from on-premise to off-premise IT solutions. Many off-premise providers have been successful in transforming themselves from just IT commodity providers to long-term IT partners. Rather than forcing organisations into wholesale adoption of Cloud, a hybrid blend of on and off-premise services have been introduced.

It's time for law firms to start taking a broader advantage of the richer propositions now available from specialists that can provide a wide range of services. Here are our top tips, outlining how they can best do this.
